Create an Easy Mermaid Costume in Just 5 Steps!

Posted by Anabelle Zaluski on 2020 Jul 21st

Since the 90s, mermaids have been making a splash in pop culture! From movies like Aquamarine to shows like H2O: Just Add Water, everybody wants to be a mermaid.

Mermaid costumes are amazing because you can be whoever you want to be! Dress up like Ariel from The Little Mermaid, a character from your favourite mermaid show, or as your own version of this mythical creature. The options really are endless, and the steps are easy. Check out the 5 things you need to make your perfect easy mermaid costume.

1. Mermaid Hair

Get those long, flowing locks going! These purples and blues are stunning, or you can do green like in John Smith's famous mermaid story. Whatever colour you choose, these mermaid hair looks can really pull your costume together. Try getting a colourful mermaid wig, or you can even dye your hair if you're feeling adventurous! Get a red wig like Ariel if you want to stay true to her look.

2. Mermaid Top

There are so many amazing options for mermaid tops! You can use a bra-like shirt, like the famous clam bra, or you can use something shiny and flowy. Take a look at some colour combinations to get the right look for you, and find one that matches your tail! Mermaid costumes don't have to be too revealing, and you can still look like a mermaid in whatever you feel comfortable.

3. Tail

The tail is the most important part of any mermaid costume! These are so beautiful and pull every look together. You can wear this look to go swimming at your next pool party, or you can get a skirt for your costume so you can walk around. There are so many colour combinations to choose from: purple and green, shades of blue, yellow and orange. Get one that matches your shirt, and your outfit is almost done!

4. Mermaid Makeup

This is your time to get creative! You can keep your mermaid makeup simple, or you can wear no makeup at all. But it's always the most fun to go wild with it! Use facial gems, pictured on the left, for an extreme look. You can also try coloured contacts for a cool, otherworldly mermaid makeup effect! You really can do whatever you want, and makeup is the best way to go crazy without spending too much money.

5. Mermaid Accessories

Now for the accessories! Customize your accessories to make them really special. The options are endless: crowns, necklaces, bracelets, elf-like ears, nail polish. If you want to be a warrior mermaid, try a trident or another cool weapon that matches your costume. Your version of a mermaid can look however you'd like! As long as you have a tail and other aquatic elements, the world is your oyster.

Take your mermaid costume to your next Halloween or costume party! Grab some friends for a group costume, or get your beau to dress as Prince Eric for a cute couples' costume. See you there!
